What a crazy warm / cold winter this is so far. The canada Geese are back and for us, that is the sign that Spring is really coming. My friend Judy DeJosia and I have re-started the Gardening and Small Farm Workshops that were so popular a few years ago (pre-COVID!) and we are really excited about them.
----------------eggs ----------------------- Our hens are still laying four dozen big brown shelled eggs a day. They are currently $6 a dozen. The price is entirely dependent on the cost of their food.
----------------chicken------------------------- We are sold out of our meat chickens but we have ordered two sets of 25 this year. We buy them as one day olds (from Moyer's Chicks, in Quakertown, PA) and raise them until they are between 8 - 10 weeks old. We slaughter them here on the farm, and sell them as whole chicken - ready to pop in your oven! They will be ready for sale in mid July.
-------------the garden--------------------- The yams are sprouting on our kitchen windowsill. The parsley seeds were started inside this week. I've inventoried our seeds and am itching to get them started, but its a bit early.
--------------the sheep------------------------- Our flock is now down to only our four ewes. We are raising them for their gorgeous wool, and are looking for two more white Romney ewes.
Our sheep are Dorset / Romney crosses that produce a beautiful soft wool in white, light grey, dark grey, or dark brown (the natural colors of our sheep). If any of you are knitters, weavers, or crocheters, we have yarn for sale. It is worsted weight, double ply, hand spun (by me!). It is It is $20 for one skein of 100 yards. We also sell wool that has been washed, carded, and is in roving ready for you to spin or felt. This is $2.50 per ounce.
----------------compost----------------- We have compost available by the bag. It is the manure from our animals, mixed with pine chips, old hay, leaves, ashes, and sawdust, all aged for at least one year. This year we purchased a leaf shredder and have been creating bags of maple and oak leaf mulch to lighten up and enrich our soil. It's for sale outside our store for $5.00 a bag.
Please keep safe and healthy everyone! And get outdoors and breath the fresh air!!
